Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Colossians 3:23-24
The unnamed watchman could have chased recognition instead of embracing faithful service. In a culture obsessed with being famous, he could have complained about his unseen role. He could have demanded a more visible position or left for a job with more glory. But there are no small roles in God's kingdom, only people who serve in small ways in their roles.
The pursuit of fame destroys the very faithfulness that makes service meaningful to God. When we chase recognition, we start serving ourselves instead of serving God. We begin to care more about who sees our work than about doing our work well. The watchman understood that faithful service comes from working for an audience of One, not from building an audience of many.
The fact that we do not know this watchman's name shows something beautiful. It shows us that God's power works best not through human strength or fame but through faithful service. When unnamed servants serve well, all the glory points back to God where it belongs. This is exactly what God wants.
God chose to work through someone whose name we do not even know on purpose. This was not an accident but God's plan. God gets the most glory when He uses people the world ignores to do important work. The unnamed watchman's story proves that God's power works best through normal faithful service. Martin Luther understood this truth when he wrote, "All works, no matter how insignificant, that are done in faith and from love of God, are thoroughly pleasing and precious in God's sight" (Commentary on Galatians, 1535).
Your current role may seem ordinary to you, but it is an assignment from God. The teacher grading papers with care serves God's kingdom. The parent making lunches with love serves God's kingdom. The janitor cleaning with excellence serves God's kingdom. These are not just jobs but kingdom assignments that matter to God.
Godseekers, God wants to use you right where you are to bring Him glory. You do not need a platform or fame to serve God's purposes significantly. The unnamed watchman did not save the day, but his faithful service in an ordinary role paved the way for others to make wise decisions when everything was at stake.
Prayer
Dear Lord, help me see my current role through Your eyes instead of the world's standards. When I am tempted to think my job is too small to matter, remind me of the unnamed watchman's example. Teach me that faithful service in any assignment brings You glory. Use my ordinary work to serve Your extraordinary purposes. Make me content to serve You faithfully whether people notice or not. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- How has the world's view of significance influenced your thinking about the importance of your current role?
- What would change in your daily work if you truly believed there are no small roles in God's kingdom?
Step of Faith
Today, I will serve in my current role with the understanding that it is a kingdom assignment from God, regardless of how ordinary it may seem.
