When God’s Good Doesn’t Feel Good
{{brizy_dc_image_alt entityId=

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Your definition of good might be killing your faith. You pray for healing, but the sickness remains. You ask for provision, but the bills keep piling up. You beg for reconciliation, but the relationship stays broken. And somewhere in the silence, you start wondering if God really works all things for good.

Here's the problem: we've confused "good" with "comfortable." We think good means easy, pleasant, pain-free, exactly what we want. So when life gets hard, we assume God isn't working. When circumstances don't improve, we question His goodness. When prayers seem unanswered, we doubt His care. But what if God's definition of good is radically different from yours?

James 1:2-4 tells us to consider it pure joy when we face trials. Why? Because trials test our faith and produce perseverance. Perseverance produces maturity and completeness in us. The Greek word for "complete" is teleios, meaning fully developed and lacking nothing. God isn't primarily interested in making you comfortable. He's committed to making you complete.

Think about the hardest season you've ever walked through. Maybe it was a financial crisis that forced you to depend on God daily. Maybe it was a betrayal that taught you the depth of forgiveness. Maybe it was a loss that showed you God's presence in grief. Looking back now, can you see how God was working? Can you trace the character He was forming in you?

God's "good" is about who you're designed to become, not what you get to experience. He's not indifferent to your pain or deaf to your prayers. He's just working toward something far more valuable than temporary comfort. He's conforming you to the image of His Son (that's verse 29, we'll get there). He's sculpting Christlikeness into your character through every circumstance you face.

Godseekers, it's time to redefine success by God's standards, not yours. Stop measuring His faithfulness by whether life feels good right now. Start asking what He's producing in you through what you're going through. The "good" He's working toward is your transformation into the likeness of Jesus. And that's worth far more than a comfortable life that leaves you unchanged.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess that I often define "good" by my comfort. I want easy circumstances more than I want Your transforming work. Forgive me for measuring Your faithfulness by whether life feels pleasant. Help me trust that You're working for my good even when I can't see it or feel it. Open my eyes to see what You're doing in me, not just to me. Give me faith to believe that Your definition of good is better than mine. Thank You that You're not just getting me through this season, but getting something into me through it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  • What's one circumstance in my life right now that doesn't feel "good," and how might God be using it to shape my character?
  • Am I more focused on asking God to change my circumstances, or on asking Him what He wants to change in me through them?

Step of Faith

Today, I will identify one difficult circumstance and ask God, "What character quality are You forming in me through this?" Instead of only praying for the situation to change, I will pray for eyes to see His transforming work.
