"Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: 'Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me.'"
Hebrews 10:5 (NIV)
The manger wasn't just a nice Christmas decoration. It was the launching point of God's rescue mission. Before Jesus arrived in Bethlehem, countless animals had been sacrificed on temple altars. Lambs, bulls, goats, and doves were offered year after year. But none of them could truly fix the problem of sin. They pointed forward to something better, someone better. They pointed to Christmas.
God prepared a human body for His Son, and that changes everything. The Father didn't send another prophet with another message. He didn't send another priest with another sacrifice. He sent His Son in human flesh. Jesus needed hands to touch lepers and bless children. He needed feet to walk dusty roads and climb Calvary's hill. He needed a body that could hunger, thirst, tire, and ultimately die. Without that body, there could be no salvation.
Imagine trying to rescue someone drowning in the ocean from the safety of shore. You could shout instructions. You could throw a life preserver. You could call for help. But none of that works if the person is too far out or too weak to reach the tools. The only real rescue requires you to enter the water yourself. You have to go where they are. You have to get wet, cold, and exhausted. That's incarnation. That's Christmas.
God didn't stay on heaven's shore shouting instructions to drowning humanity. He entered the water. Christ took on human flesh and came where we are. He experienced hunger when we hunger. He felt pain when we hurt. He faced temptation like we face temptation. The body God prepared for Jesus wasn't a shield from our struggles. It was a bridge into them. He came all the way down to lift us all the way up.
Here's why this matters for your Christmas gratitude today. Every religious ritual you've tried has limits. Every good deed you've done falls short. Every New Year's resolution you've made eventually breaks. You can't sacrifice enough, work enough, or be good enough to earn God's approval. But you don't have to. Christ's body, prepared by the Father, accomplished what your efforts never could.
Godseekers, the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger was God's gift. Not just any gift, but the perfect gift. The Father prepared a body for His Son so that body could be broken for you. Every time you see a nativity scene this Christmas, remember this truth. That infant came to do what animals on altars could never do. He came to take away sin once and for all. Your gratitude doesn't depend on what you bring to God. It flows from what God brought to you: His Son in human flesh.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for preparing a body for Your Son. Thank You that Jesus didn't stay in heaven's comfort but entered our world in human flesh. I'm grateful that You saw my need and provided the perfect solution. This Christmas, help me stop trying to earn Your approval through my own efforts. Let me rest in what Christ's body already accomplished. When I'm tempted to rely on religious rituals or good works, remind me that Jesus did what I could never do. Fill my heart with gratitude for the incarnation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What "sacrifices and offerings" are you still trying to make to earn God's approval this Christmas season?
- How does understanding that God prepared Christ's body specifically for your salvation deepen your gratitude?
Step of Faith
Today, I will stop trying to earn God's favor through one specific religious effort and instead thank Him for the body He prepared for Jesus.
