"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 3:14 (NIV)
You have not come this far just to stop here. Paul ends this passage with his eyes fixed on what is still ahead. He does not look back at what he has lost or left behind. He presses toward the prize, and he calls you to do the same.
The word press in Philippians 3:14 is the Greek word dioko. It means to pursue with intensity, to chase something down without slowing up. This is the same word used elsewhere in Scripture for fierce persecution. The energy that once drove him to persecute believers now drives him toward Christ.
In 2 Timothy 4:7, Paul writes near the end of his life with calm certainty. He says he fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. That prize is a crown of righteousness given by a righteous Judge. That crown is not for Paul alone but for all who long for Christ.
We live in a culture that celebrates starting but struggles to finish. If we are honest, many of us have slowed down without even noticing it. The fire that once drove us toward God has become a quiet, comfortable ember. Godseekers, we were not called to coast. We were called to press.
Ask yourself honestly whether you are still pressing or just maintaining. Is there a dream, a calling, or a step of obedience you have quietly shelved? The prize Paul describes is not earned by perfection but pursued through faithfulness. God is not looking for people who never stumble but people who refuse to quit.
Godseekers, the finish line is real and the prize is worth every hard step. The God who started this race in you will be there at the end. You have not missed your moment and it is not too late to press again. Fix your eyes ahead and keep running because the prize is still there.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the author and the finisher of my faith, and I praise you because you do not start what you do not complete. Forgive me for the seasons I have coasted, the moments I let the fire go quiet, and the callings I have shelved out of fear or weariness. Today I choose to press again, not in my own strength but in yours. Keep my eyes fixed on the prize and let me finish well for your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- Where have you slowed down in your walk with God without realizing it, and what would pressing forward look like in that specific area this week?
- What would it mean for your family or your church community if you finished your race well, and who is watching you run right now?
Step of Faith
Today, find one person in your life who has slowed down or stepped away from their faith. Reach out to them, not with a sermon but with genuine care, and remind them that the prize is still ahead and it is not too late to press on.
