"Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning."

You keep waiting for God to say something new. Maybe you scroll for a fresh teaching or a sharper insight. You assume real growth means discovering something you missed. But John opens this passage pointing you back to a truth you already have.
This old command is not whatever feels true to you personally. John means the truth about Jesus that the apostles actually taught and handed down. It is the same Jesus who died, rose, and reigns exactly as Scripture describes Him. That truth does not shift to match what feels comfortable today.
This is not John inventing something to keep you loyal to him. In Psalm 119:89-90, the psalmist says God's word stands firm forever in heaven. That word was fixed before you were born and does not answer to your preferences. What you call truth about Jesus must match what He has already revealed.
We all carry a version of Jesus we quietly prefer. We soften the parts that convict us and keep what feels safe. We build a Jesus who agrees with almost everything we already think. But the real Jesus was never ours to design.
Test what you believe about Jesus against what Scripture actually says. Ask the Holy Spirit to confirm what is true and correct what is not. Do not assume your version of Jesus is automatically the biblical one. Let Him settle it, even if that means letting go of something familiar.
Godseekers, this is written so you may know Him truthfully. Not a version shaped by comfort, culture, or what feels easiest to believe. Let the Holy Spirit confirm or correct what you have believed until now. Carry the real Jesus today, exactly as He has always been.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are exactly who Scripture reveals, not who we imagine You to be. Your truth stood firm long before we were born. You are able to correct any version of You we have quietly shaped on our own. We are not asking You to fit what feels comfortable to us. We are asking You to show us who You actually are. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Today, write down what you currently believe about who Jesus is, in your own words. Compare it honestly against a passage of Scripture that describes Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to confirm what is true and adjust what is not. Let this be the start of following the real Jesus, not the one you have quietly shaped.
