"My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever."
Psalm 145:21 (NIV)
Many of us treat praise as private, or as something that happens only on Sunday. We think speaking about God belongs to people with big stories and good words. We do not want to sound religious or awkward. So what we have seen of Him stays inside.
Psalm 145 does not end in private. It begins with one person saying "I will." It closes by calling all creation to join. David's own mouth opens first, and then the circle widens to every creature. Praise that starts in one heart was never meant to stay there.
Verse 4 shows how praise travels. One generation commends God's works to the next and tells of His mighty acts. Faith gets handed down by people who talk. A parent tells a child. A neighbor tells a neighbor. A friend says what God did when no one else was in the room.
What you pass on is not a performance. The psalm speaks of God's works and His goodness, not the speaker's skill. You do not need polished words. You need something true. "He stayed near when I was ashamed." "He did not walk away when I failed." Those sentences are praise.
Silence is not always humility. Sometimes it is fear. For some of us it is the sense that we are not qualified. For others it is the ache of an unanswered prayer, and speaking of God's goodness feels dishonest. You do not have to claim more than you have seen. You can say what is true. He is gracious. He is near. He is worth telling.
Godseekers, you are joining a song that was already being sung and will not end. The psalm closes with "for ever and ever," the same words that opened it. God's name is worth passing on because His kingdom does not end. Your voice is not carrying the song. It is joining it. The King you have been looking at is worthy of every generation.
Prayer
Everlasting King, Your name is worth telling. I confess that I have kept quiet out of fear and awkwardness. Open my mouth to say what is true about You. Let my small word join the praise of every generation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What keeps you from saying out loud what God has done or shown you?
- What did the people who first told you about God teach you about whether faith should be spoken or kept private?
Step of Faith
Write three sentences about one time God helped you, comforted you, or stayed with you in something hard. Keep them for the day someone needs to hear them.
