Leaving Your Water Jar

Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 'Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.'"

John 4:28-29 (NIV)

She left her water jar behind. This wasn't forgetfulness; it was transformation. She came for physical water but found living water. The jar that defined her daily routine suddenly didn't matter anymore.

That jar represented everything that held her back. It was her reason for being there at noon. It symbolized her isolation and her old priorities. It was the weight she carried every day, both literally and figuratively.

When you meet Jesus, some things must be abandoned. The Samaritan woman couldn't carry her old life and her new mission. She had to choose between drawing water and drawing people. She chose to become a Bridgemaker instead of remaining a water carrier.

Your water jar might be different from hers. Maybe it's the pursuit of success that consumes your time. Perhaps it's past hurts you've been carrying for years. It could be the comfortable routine that keeps you from Kingdom work.

What jar is God asking you to leave? The thing you came for might not be what God has for you. Your daily routine might be preventing your divine assignment. When God calls you to be a Bridgemaker, some jars must stay behind.

Godseekers, leaving your jar is how Bridgemaking begins. The Samaritan woman couldn't have reached her town while clutching her water vessel. She couldn't proclaim Christ while maintaining her old routine. Your abandoned jar—that career obsession, that bitter memory, that safe routine—becomes the very freedom that qualifies you to bridge others to Jesus.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, show me what jars I need to leave behind. I've been carrying things that keep me from Your calling. Give me courage to abandon old priorities for Your new mission. Help me let go of what weighs me down so I can run freely as Your Bridgemaker. Transform my routine into Your divine purpose. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What "water jar" (old priority, past hurt, or comfortable routine) is keeping you from fully embracing God's call?
  2. What would become possible if you left that jar behind today?

Step of Faith

Today, I will identify one thing I've been holding onto that prevents me from being an effective Bridgemaker and take a step toward leaving it behind.
