"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Luke 12:34 (NIV):
Your spending tells the truth about your worship. You can say you love God with your mouth. You can claim Jesus is your priority. But your bank statement doesn't lie. It shows where your treasure really is. And Jesus says wherever your treasure is, that's where your heart is too. Your money follows what you love most.
Most people get this backward. They think, "I love God, so my money will follow." But Jesus flips it. He says your treasure leads and your heart follows. Want to know what you really worship? Look at your last three months of spending. Where did the money go? That's where your heart is heading. Your credit card statement is a spiritual diagnostic tool.
Here's the shocking part: you can change your heart by changing your treasure. If you want to care about missions, start giving to missions. Your heart will follow your money. If you want to love your church, start supporting your church financially. You'll find yourself more invested, more engaged, more passionate. Generosity doesn't just show what you love. It trains you to love better.
Think about what lasts and what doesn't. Your car will rust. Your clothes will wear out. Your house will need repairs and eventually crumble. Even your retirement account can crash overnight. Jesus isn't being negative. He's being honest. Everything on earth is temporary. So why invest your whole life in things that won't last?
Treasure in heaven works differently. No thief can steal it. No moth can destroy it. No market can crash it. No disaster can touch it. When you give to someone in need, you're banking in heaven. When you support God's work, you're making eternal deposits. When you invest in people and kingdom purposes, you're storing up what actually lasts forever.
Godseekers, this is an invitation to freedom. You don't have to guard what you can't keep. You don't have to worry about what won't last. Instead, invest in eternity. Give generously. Support God's mission. Meet real needs. And watch what happens to your heart. It will follow your treasure straight to the things of God. Your joy will grow. Your peace will deepen. Your love for Jesus will increase. That's the promise.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I praise You as the keeper of eternal treasure. You hold riches that never fade or fail. Forgive me for investing in things that won't last. Forgive me for treasuring what I can't keep. Forgive me for letting my money reveal a divided heart. Give me wisdom to see what truly matters. Help me invest in Your kingdom with joy and trust. Change my heart by changing where I put my treasure. Teach me to store up riches in heaven. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- If someone looked at my bank statement with no other information, what would they say I worship?
- What would change in my heart if I started investing more in eternal things this week?
Step of Faith
Today, I will review my recent spending and make one change that moves my treasure toward eternal investment.
