"If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work."
1 Corinthians 3:12-13 (NIV)
What Are You Building That Won't Burn?
"If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work."
1 Corinthians 3:12-13 (NIV)
"Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away."
1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV)
What if everything you've built means nothing? Every choice you make, every hour you spend, every dollar you invest is construction material. You're building a legacy, a reputation, a career, a family. The work itself isn't wrong. God calls you to work with excellence and plan wisely. But here's the question that should stop you. What are you building with? What's your motivation? Will it survive God's refining fire?
Paul gives us a sobering picture of judgment day. We all build our lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ. That foundation is secure for every believer. But what we build on top of that foundation matters. Gold, silver, and costly stones represent eternal investments that survive God's refining fire. Wood, hay, and straw represent pursuits built on selfish ambition that burn up when tested. The fire doesn't test what you built. It tests why you built it.
Consider what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:8. "Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away." Even spiritual gifts pass away. If those things don't last, what about your career when it's driven by selfish ambition instead of service? What about your wealth when it's hoarded for security instead of used generously? They become wood, hay, and straw when love isn't the foundation. Love like this is what makes the difference between building materials that burn and materials that shine.
Agape love transforms your work into gold, silver, and costly stones. When you take on the difficult project to help your struggling teammate succeed, that's eternal construction. When you give a portion of your bonus to support a missionary family, that's fireproof building. When you mentor an intern because you genuinely want to develop them, that's lasting investment. The same career can be wood or gold depending on whether love like this drives it. The same money can be straw or silver depending on whether generosity marks it.
What's motivating your daily work right now? Are you climbing the career ladder to serve yourself or to increase your ability to love others? Are you building wealth to feel secure or to have resources for Kingdom generosity? Are you pursuing success to make a name for yourself or to use influence for Christ? The activity isn't the issue. The heart behind it determines whether it burns or shines.
Godseekers, your foundation in Christ is secure. You're not earning salvation by building with the right materials. Jesus already saved you. But love like this transforms what you're already doing into something eternal. Let agape drive your ambition at work. Let generosity shape your financial decisions. Let service mark your career pursuits. Work hard and plan wisely, but let love be the reason. Build with gold, not because you have to, but because God's love changes everything you touch. That's Love's Lasting Worth.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that my foundation in Christ is secure. Thank You that nothing can shake what Jesus accomplished for me. But Father, I confess my motives aren't always pure. I've been building for myself instead of for Your glory. I've been driven by ambition instead of love. Transform my heart. Help me see my career as a platform for serving people. Help me view my resources as tools for generous blessing. Let love like this drive everything I build. Teach me to work with excellence motivated by sacrificial love, not selfishness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What's really motivating my career ambitions—service to others or advancement for myself?
- How can I let agape transform my current work into eternal investment?
Step of Faith
Today, I will take on one task or make one financial decision with love as my primary motivation, asking "How does this serve and bless others?" before I proceed.
