"The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, 'Come up to us and we'll teach you a lesson!' Then Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, 'Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.'"
1 Samuel 14:12
Following someone else into danger requires a different kind of bravery than leading the charge. The armor bearer had to trust Jonathan's judgment completely while facing the same deadly risks. He couldn't control the timing, choose the strategy, or change the plan if things went wrong. Following someone else up a cliff toward armed enemies takes incredible courage mixed with total surrender of control.
The scariest moments often come when you have to act on someone else's faith instead of your own. Jonathan declared that God had given them victory, but the armor bearer had to climb that cliff on Jonathan's confidence, not his own revelation. Sometimes God calls you to step into frightening situations based on another person's certainty about God's will. This requires enormous trust in both God and godly leadership.
Courage without cameras or crowds is the purest form of bravery. No one was watching this climb except enemies who wanted to kill them. There would be no medals, no speeches, no recognition if they succeeded. The armor bearer chose to risk his life in complete anonymity, with only God as his witness. This kind of courage comes from internal conviction, not external motivation.
The willingness to risk everything for someone else's vision demands extraordinary selflessness. The armor bearer wasn't fighting for his own dreams or goals. He was risking his life for Jonathan's plan and Israel's freedom. True courage often means putting your safety on the line for purposes bigger than yourself, especially when you won't get personal benefit from the outcome.
Anonymous acts of bravery often determine the success or failure of public victories. Without the armor bearer's willingness to follow Jonathan up that cliff, there would have been no victory at all. His private choice to act courageously made the public miracle possible. Your hidden acts of bravery in difficult moments often determine whether others' bold plans succeed or fail completely.
Godseekers, embrace the courage that doesn't need witnesses or applause. When God calls you to follow godly leaders into scary situations, respond with faith rather than fear. Choose to act bravely even when no one will see or celebrate your courage. Your anonymous bravery in crucial moments can change outcomes in ways you may never fully understand.
Prayer
Dear Lord, give me the courage to follow godly leadership into difficult places, even when I can't see the full plan. Help me trust Your work through others and act bravely when no one is watching. Strengthen me to risk my comfort for purposes bigger than myself. Use my anonymous courage to accomplish Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- When has God called you to show courage by following someone else's leadership into a difficult situation?
- What fears hold you back from acting bravely when there's no recognition or reward?
Step of Faith
Today, I will choose to act courageously in support of someone else's godly vision, even if my bravery goes completely unnoticed.
