"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One."

You do not have to defend yourself in this courtroom. Many of us walk through life bracing for accusation. We rehearse our defense before anyone has even accused us. But someone else has already taken up your case.

John names Him plainly, our advocate with the Father. Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, stands there for you (2:1). He does not wait for you to plead your own case. He is already standing there, speaking on your behalf.

Paul declares the same certainty in his letter to Rome. Christ Jesus is at the right hand of God interceding for us (8:34). No one can bring a charge that actually sticks against you. The case was settled before the accusation even arrived.

We carry this question more than we say out loud. We wonder if yesterday's failure is still being held against us. The church has always wrestled with this lingering sense of guilt. But the verdict was never left for us to decide.

Stop rehearsing a defense that has already been filed. Your advocate already knows the full weight of your case. This is the very confidence John wrote his letter to give. Let that truth quiet the voice that keeps accusing you.

Godseekers, someone is already speaking up for you today. You do not walk into this day defending yourself alone. Your case has already been argued and already been won. Walk forward as someone who is already fully defended.

Prayer

Lord of heaven and earth, before we bring our own case we bring someone else's. Someone near us is carrying an old accusation they cannot seem to put down. Someone in this church still believes yesterday's failure defines today. Remind them, and remind us, that Jesus is already speaking on our behalf. In Jesus' name, Amen.

1. What accusation do you keep replaying against yourself that Jesus has already answered?
2. What would change in you if you finally believed the verdict was already settled?

Step of Faith

Today, speak this truth aloud over yourself before you do anything else. Say, Jesus is my advocate, and my case is already settled. Repeat it if the old accusation tries to answer back. Let this declaration shape how you carry yourself through the rest of the day.
