"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

1 John 4:1 (NIV)

Not every spiritual voice you hear is from God. Teachings, testimonies, and prophecies pour in from every direction today. Most of us absorb all of it without stopping to test any of it. John says that instinct is exactly what gets believers into trouble.

John gives a direct command instead of a gentle suggestion here. He tells this congregation to test every spirit rather than believe it. Many false prophets had already gone out into the world by then. Testing every spirit was never optional advice but a command for survival.

Scripture already gives us a working example of what testing looks like. In Acts 17:11 the Bereans received Paul's message eagerly and tested it against Scripture. Their careful search confirmed his message and many of them believed. They tested the spirit behind the message before they trusted the message itself.

We have all absorbed a teaching without checking where it came from. Every generation of believers has faced this same pull toward blind trust. A feeling of certainty is not the same thing as truth. Every believer eventually has to relearn this same hard discipline.

Stop believing a message just because it sounds spiritual enough. Ask whether it confesses Jesus Christ has come in real flesh. Ask whether it lines up with Scripture the way Paul's message did. Testing is not distrust but taking God fully at His word.

Godseekers, test every spirit before you let it in. Stay alert to every teaching that claims to speak for God. Hold each one up against Christ and the Scriptures He gave us. Vigilance is not doubt but simply guarding what you believe.

Prayer

Father of mercies, we admit we have believed messages without testing them first. We have trusted a feeling of certainty instead of Your written word. But You already gave us the test we need through Your Word. Teach us to test every spirit against the truth of Christ. We choose to trust the Spirit already living within us today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
