The Enemy Stops at the Door

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, So You May Know

"We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them."

1 John 5:18 (NIV)

Maybe you have been sleeping with one eye open lately. Something keeps whispering that you are still exposed, still one mistake from disaster. You check the locks on your life again and again some days. John wants to tell you something about who is actually guarding your door.

Some of us have been hurt before by someone we trusted completely. That kind of wound makes vigilance feel like the only safe way to live. John is not telling you to stop caring or paying attention. John is telling you who is holding the door while you rest.

Being kept does not mean nothing hard will ever reach you. It means the evil one cannot claim you or undo what God has done. Jude prayed that same confidence over believers who felt unsteady on their feet. In Jude 1:24, he called God able to keep us from stumbling at all.

We carry this question more than we admit out loud to each other. Are we actually safe, or just hoping nothing bad happens to us next? That fear makes sense given everything some of us have survived already. But safety was rooted in His grip, never in our own vigilance.

Your life probably feels like a door you must keep guarding. Someone stronger than your fear has been standing in that doorway all along. That vigilance you have been carrying was never actually keeping you safe. You can rest today because someone else is keeping watch for you.

Godseekers, someone stronger than every threat is holding on to you. You do not have to guard the door by yourself anymore. So you may know, the evil one cannot undo what God has claimed. Walk out today with your shoulders down and your eyes steady.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are the One who keeps what You have claimed. Thank You for holding us even when our fear feels louder than our faith. Forgive us for guarding ourselves as if You were not enough. Some of us are exhausted from staying alert instead of resting in You. We trust You to keep what we cannot protect on our own. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What specific fear has kept you feeling like you must guard yourself?
  2. Where does your church or family need reminding that God is the One keeping watch?

Step of Faith

Today, sit in silence for five full minutes without your phone nearby. Let go of the vigilance you have been carrying on your own. Simply rest in the truth that God is keeping watch.
