The Hand That Lifts the Bowed

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, The Posture of Prayer

"The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down."

Psalm 145:14 (NIV)

Many of us believe we must stand up straight before God will lift us. We think prayer is for people who have it together. So we wait until the diagnosis feels manageable. We wait until the job situation settles. We wait until the grief loosens its grip. Meanwhile we stay bent over, alone.

Psalm 145 puts the bowed down inside a hymn of praise. Verses 10 through 13 speak of glory, splendor, and an everlasting kingdom. Then the psalm turns to people who fall and people who are bent over. This is a praise psalm, and it is full of needy people.

Notice who does the lifting. The verse gives that work to the LORD. Nothing in it asks the bowed to straighten up first. It does not even say why they are bent. It only says who holds them.

The greatness no one can fathom is the greatness that stoops. Verse 3 says no one can reach the bottom of God's greatness. Verse 14 shows what that greatness does. It bends toward the weak. He is not too high to bother with the ones who are down. In this psalm, His greatness is seen in how far He is willing to come.

This does not promise that the weight will lift on our schedule. Psalm 145 is a hymn. It tells us who God is and who His creatures depend on. Verses 15 and 16 say all eyes look to Him and that He opens His hand. They do not promise that no one goes without. They do not set a date for relief. Some of you have been bowed for a long time. This verse does not rush you. It says He holds you while you are bent.

Godseekers, you can look up without standing up. A bowed head can still turn toward Him. You do not have to hold yourself together before you pray. Tell Him where you are bent, and let Him be the One who holds you.

Prayer

Faithful God, I am bent under something I cannot lift. I have tried to stand straight before I came to You. You uphold those who fall, and You lift those who are bowed down. I come as I am. Hold me up, and I leave the timing with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What are you carrying that has changed how you stand, and what are you afraid would happen if someone saw it?
  2. Where did you learn that needing to be held means you have failed, and how does that decide how long you wait before you come to God?

Step of Faith

Write one sentence naming what is bending you. Read it aloud to God and say, "You uphold those who fall, so hold me up in this." Then leave what happens next with Him.
