"And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew."
John 2:9 (NIV)
The people closest to the miracle were the ones who obeyed. The master of the banquet tasted the wine but had no idea where it came from. The servants knew because they were the ones who filled the jars. Proximity to what Jesus does is always the reward of doing what He says.
This detail in John 2:9 is not accidental. In the ancient world, a banquet master held the highest social authority over a feast. His word on the quality of the wine was final and carried public weight. Yet the servants standing quietly in the background held knowledge he would never have.
David did not write Psalm 34 from a comfortable seat. He had tasted God's goodness in desperate circumstances and could not stay silent. Psalm 34:8 is his invitation: taste and see that the Lord is good. But tasting requires getting close enough to take a sip.
We have often admired the miracles of Jesus from a distance. We read the signs in John's Gospel and we appreciate what He did for other people. But the Signs of the Son were never meant to be spectator events. They were invitations to get close enough to see what only the obedient get to see.
Are you close enough to Jesus to see what He is doing right now? The servants did not understand the miracle before they obeyed. They understood it only after they had done what He said. Obedience is not the price of the miracle but the seat from which you watch it.
Godseekers, stop watching from the doorway. The servants at Cana did not get a full explanation before they picked up the jars. They got one instruction, they followed it, and they saw what no one else in that room saw. That same seat is available to you right now.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that I have been watching from a distance and calling it faith. I have appreciated what You do without putting myself in the place of obedience where I can actually see it. Show me the instruction I have been sitting on. I pick it up today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What is the last clear instruction Jesus gave you that you have not yet acted on, and what has that delay cost you in terms of what you have missed seeing Him do?
- Who in your family or church is watching from the doorway right now, and how might your own obedience become an invitation for them to step closer?
Step of Faith
Today, identify one instruction from God you have been sitting on and take the first visible step toward obeying it. Do not wait for the full explanation. Pick up the jar and start filling.
