"As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."
Acts 4:20 (NIV)
Most people assume courage is a decision made under pressure. We picture Peter and John gritting their teeth to speak bravely. But look closely at the actual words they chose. They did not say they would not stop speaking.
They said instead that they simply could not stop. That is a very different claim than mustering up willpower. Something had happened to them that made silence impossible now. Obedience here sounds less like achievement and more like inability.
In Jeremiah 20:9, the prophet felt this same impossibility centuries earlier. He tried to stop speaking God's word entirely. It kept bringing him nothing but trouble and public ridicule. He describes the word as fire shut inside his bones.
He grew weary of holding that fire in completely. Finally he admitted plainly that he simply could not. Fire like that eventually finds a way out somehow. Silence stops being a real option once it does.
We have all assumed we need more courage to speak up. We wait for fear to disappear before opening our mouths. But Peter and John were not more confident than we are. They had simply seen something too real to hold inside.
Godseekers, you were never meant to force yourself into speaking. Stay close enough to Jesus that silence feels unnatural instead. Let what you have seen become too real to contain. Regardless of the cost, some things refuse to stay quiet.
Prayer
Risen Lord, You are the One who turns fear into fire that cannot be contained. You gave Peter and John a story too real to hold. What You did in them, You are able to do in us. We declare that what we have seen is too real for silence. We are Yours, and we will speak regardless of the cost. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What has God done in your life that has become too real for you to stay quiet about?
- How might a whole generation change if believers stopped waiting for courage and simply spoke?
Step of Faith
Today, sit in silence for ten minutes and ask God to bring one thing to mind. Do not journal it or plan how to share it yet. Simply let it settle until it feels too real to ignore. Let this be the fire you carry into tomorrow.
