“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
1 John 3:1a (NIV)
Some of us still audition for love we already have. We check our performance before we believe we belong. That habit did not start with God, but it follows us into faith. John names the reality before he asks anything of us at all.
You are not what your feelings say about you today. John's original audience had recently watched teachers leave claiming deeper knowledge. John answers that fear with love already lavished on us, not knowledge owed. This whole letter exists for one reason, so you may know your standing is secure.
Fear was never part of the family you were adopted into. Paul told the Roman church they did not receive a spirit of slavery. In Romans 8:15, that same Spirit brought about our adoption as sons. Now we cry out to God as children, not as servants earning a place.
Every one of us has tried to earn a love already given. We work harder in prayer when we feel distant from God. We measure our worth by how consistent our devotion looks that week. The truth is simpler and harder to accept than any performance we could offer.
Stop measuring today against the weight of yesterday's guilt. You do not need a better week to belong to God. Name one place you still feel like you must prove yourself. Bring that place honestly before the God who already calls you His.
Godseekers, your standing with the Father was settled before this day began. You are named His child, not a candidate still under review. Walk into this week with confidence instead of quiet self-doubt. Carry that settled identity into every conversation and every decision today.
Prayer
Risen Lord, You are the Father who calls the unworthy His own. You have never needed our performance to prove Your love is real. You are able to settle every doubt we carry about belonging. You are able to silence the voice that says we must earn Your love. We declare today that we are already Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- Where in your life are you still trying to earn what God has already given you?
- How does knowing your family's identity in Christ change the way you treat newer or struggling believers around you?
Step of Faith
Today, write down one thing you have been doing to try to earn God's approval. Take that paper and tear it up as an act of surrender before Him. Thank God out loud for calling you His before you did anything to deserve it.
