You’re Looking at the Wrong Jesus

"So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer."

2 Corinthians 5:16 (NIV)

How you see Jesus determines everything else you see. Paul does not start with how you see yourself or others. He starts with Christ, and that order is not an accident. Get the picture of Jesus wrong and everything else is distorted.

The church in Corinth had a Jesus problem, and it was not what you might expect. They were not atheists or skeptics. They were believers who kept evaluating Jesus by the wrong standard. They measured him by status and credibility, and Paul calls that kata sarka, a Greek phrase meaning according to the flesh.

The resurrection did not just raise Jesus from the dead. It completely overturned how he must be seen. What looked like defeat on Friday was the most powerful act in human history. Jesus says in John 6:63 that the Spirit gives life and the flesh counts for nothing. The resurrection is the only lens that tells the truth about him.

This is us more than we want to admit. We come to God wanting a Jesus who fixes things and makes life easier. We judge his work by whether things are going well and quietly wonder if he is strong enough when the answer is no. That is kata sarka, and it will always shrink Jesus down to the size of our circumstances.

The Jesus who rose from the dead is not manageable, and he was never meant to be. He is not a resource you pull from when life gets hard. He is the risen Lord who has already defeated everything that has ever threatened you. Ask yourself honestly: are you trusting the Jesus of the empty tomb, or a version built from disappointment?

Godseekers, resurrection life begins with resurrection sight. You cannot live from an empty tomb if you keep picturing a limited Jesus. He is more powerful than your worst failure, more present than your deepest fear, and more than enough for today. See him right, and watch how differently everything else looks.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I confess that I have reduced You to what I could understand and what I needed You to be. I praise You because You are not who I have made You. You are the risen Christ and the tomb is still empty. Forgive me for evaluating You through my circumstances instead of through the resurrection, and open my eyes today to see You as You really are. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. In what area of your life have you been seeing Jesus through your circumstances rather than through the resurrection, and how has that shaped the way you have been praying?
  2. Who in your family, your church, or your community have you written off because you are still seeing them kata sarka, according to what is visible, rather than through what the risen Christ can do?

Step of Faith

Today, sit quietly for five minutes and ask Jesus one question: who do You say You are right now in my situation? Write down what comes and let the answer be bigger than your circumstances.
