“The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.”
1 John 3:8b (NIV)
Some of you are still fighting a war Christ won. You brace yourself daily for a fight that has already ended. John's church feared those false teachers still carried real spiritual power. John points to one small detail that changes how we see the fight.
Look closely at the exact tense John chooses to describe what Christ did. He says the Son of God appeared to destroy the devil's work. That word destroy points to a finished act, not a future hope. Most people rush past that detail without letting it change anything.
Paul describes the same finished victory using courtroom language. In Colossians 2:15, he says Christ disarmed every power and authority. Christ made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them at the cross. That victory was displayed publicly, not hidden away for later.
We often live like the door was never shut at all. We treat old struggles like they still hold real power over us. Old fears keep visiting even after Christ already shut the door on them. That door was shut long before today, so you may know it for certain.
There is a difference between a defeated enemy and one that is gone. Christ broke the devil's authority, but the struggle can still return for a while. You are not promised an instant end to every fear you carry. You are promised a finished victory to stand on while you walk it out.
Godseekers, that defeated power has no legal claim on you today. Carry that finished victory into whatever you are still afraid of. The struggle may continue, but the outcome of the war is already settled. Walk forward as someone who belongs to the side that already won.
Prayer
Lord of all creation, before we bring our own battles we bring others in this church. Someone near us is still fighting a fear You have already defeated. Someone else is carrying shame they think You have not fully dealt with. Meet them today with the same finished victory You have already won. Let this whole church walk in that freedom together this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What fear or struggle are you still fighting as though Christ has not already defeated it?
- How could you help remind other believers that the enemy's power has already been broken?
Step of Faith
Today, pray aloud over the specific fear or struggle you named. Speak directly to God about it instead of only thinking it. Thank Him out loud for a victory that is already finished.
