"In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome."

Obedience is supposed to feel light, but yours feels heavy. You keep pushing through commands like they are one more task on a list. John says love for God is simply keeping His commands, plainly stated. Then he adds something you may have never noticed before now.
Why would John call something burdensome if it is not actually true for you? Maybe the weight is not coming from the command itself at all. Maybe you are obeying to earn something you already fully have. That kind of obeying will always feel like carrying a stone uphill.
Jesus said something almost identical about obedience long before John wrote this. In Matthew 11:30, He called His own yoke easy and His burden light. A yoke only feels light when you are walking beside the one who made it. Obedience gets heavy the moment you start carrying it alone instead.
Every one of us has carried a command like it was a weight to survive. We nod along in church while quietly dreading what it costs us. No one warns us that obedience done alone always turns into exhaustion. God never asked us to carry His commands by ourselves in the first place.
One command has probably felt heavier than the rest this week. Maybe the weight was never about the command in the first place. It may be about needing to earn a love you already have. So you may know, obedience was never meant to be a debt.
Godseekers, loving God was never meant to feel like exhausting labor. Keeping His commands is proof of love, not a debt you must repay. His commands were never burdensome, no matter how heavy they have felt. Take one step of obedience today and let it finally feel light.
Prayer
Father of mercies, some of us are tired from obeying out of fear. We have turned Your commands into one more way to prove ourselves worthy. But You never asked us to carry that weight by ourselves. Teach us to obey You because we already know we are loved. We choose to walk beside You instead of ahead of You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
