God Uses the Ones Nobody Expected

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, Tell

"And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Acts 1:8b (NIV)

One small word in that promise is easy to miss. Jesus was speaking to fishermen, not scholars or leaders. He looked at ordinary men and called them witnesses. That single word carried more weight than anyone in the room realized.

Notice who Jesus was actually looking at when He said it. These were not polished speakers or trained religious teachers. They were men who had scattered when soldiers came for Him. Yet the promise landed on them, not on someone more impressive.

Notice how Paul described this same pattern in his letters. In 1 Corinthians 1:27, he said God chose the foolish things. God chose the weak to shame what seemed strong and wise. This was never an accident but always God's plan from the start.

We assume God needs someone impressive to accomplish His work. Every one of us has looked at someone else and felt smaller. We have decided the more capable person should speak instead. But God has never needed capable people, only available ones.

Stop assuming someone else is more qualified than you are. You are not disqualified because you feel ordinary or unfinished. God has always used people nobody expected Him to choose. Let Him use you exactly as you are today.

Godseekers, keep looking for the word "you" in His promises. It was written for fishermen, and it was written for you too. Every promise God gives to His people includes your name in it. Carry that word with you into every room today.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are good, and You have never needed impressive people. Thank You for choosing ordinary people to carry Your name. Forgive us for believing we are too small for Your purposes. Remind us today that You call the available, not the capable. We trust You to use us exactly as we are. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. Where have you assumed someone else was more qualified than you?
  2. Who in your family or church needs to hear that God still uses ordinary people?

Step of Faith

Today, do one quiet act of service for someone without explaining why. Choose something small but real, not a grand gesture meant to be noticed. Let it be between you and God alone. Trust that being unnoticed does not make it unimportant.
