God’s Loving Eye

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, The Posture of Prayer

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you."

Psalm 32:8 (NIV)

Some of us believe that after we sin, God forgives us but keeps watching for the next time we fall. We picture Him like a boss who lets one offense go but writes it down. So we live on edge. We obey to stay out of trouble, and every new failure feels like proof that God is about to set us aside.

Psalm 32 shows God guiding the forgiven, not waiting to catch them. After David confesses his sin and finds refuge in God, the voice in verse 8 promises instruction and teaching for the road ahead. The psalm does not say who is speaking, but many readers hear God Himself answering David. Forgiveness does not end with the sinner sent away. It continues with God teaching that person the way to go.

The eye on you is a loving eye. God counsels the forgiven "with my loving eye on you." The Lord is not scanning for your next sin. He watches you like a teacher who cares where you are going.

Verse 9 shows two ways to be led, and God invites us to choose the better one. A horse or mule without understanding must be controlled with a bit and bridle, the gear in its mouth and around its head, or it will not come. That is being dragged. The better way is to follow God's counsel willingly. David learned this the hard way. He did not confess until God's hand was heavy on him. You do not have to wait for that pain.

Being forgiven means God puts you back on the path and walks it with you. He does not set forgiven people aside. He teaches them the way to go. That includes the hard steps: turning from the sin, making right what you wronged, and staying away from what pulls you back. You do not take those steps alone, and you do not take them to earn God's love. You take them because He already loves you.

Godseekers, the God who forgave your sin is the God who will teach you the way to go. He does not count your confessed sin against you. He keeps a loving eye on you. Stay teachable, and follow the Lord willingly.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess that I have treated You like someone waiting to catch me. I have obeyed out of fear instead of love, and too often You have had to pull me back when I should have come to You. Thank You for forgiving me and for teaching me the way I should go. Make me teachable, and help me follow You willingly. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. When you picture God watching you, what do you believe He is looking for, and how does that belief shape the way you obey Him?
  2. Where are you waiting for pain to drag you back to God instead of following His counsel now, and what makes you resist being taught?

Step of Faith

Choose one step of obedience connected to the sin you confessed. It may be an apology, returning what you took, or removing what keeps pulling you back. Before you do it today, pray, "Lord, teach me the way I should go." Then take that step.
