"Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.' And you forgave the guilt of my sin."
Psalm 32:5 (NIV)
It is easy to pray "Lord, forgive me for everything" and call that confession. We reason that God already knows. He does, and a short prayer is better than none. But "everything" lets us stay vague about the one sin we most need to name.
David named his sin without shrinking it. In this one verse he calls it "my sin," "my iniquity," and "my transgressions." He uses three different words and owns every one of them. And he says it to God, the One he had been hiding from.
Psalm 32 shows two ways to cover sin, and only one of them brings forgiveness. At the start of the psalm, David calls a person blessed when God covers his sins. The Hebrew word for "cover" there is the same word David uses here when he says he did not cover up his iniquity. When we cover our sin, we only hide it. When God covers our sin, He forgives it in His mercy.
Naming your sin to God may sting, but hiding it hurts longer. Anyone who has had a splinter knows this. You can leave it in and walk carefully for days, or you can let it be dug out and feel it for a moment. Hidden sin works the same way. As long as you keep it covered, it stays in you. When you name it to God, He takes it out.
When David confessed his sin, God forgave him. That forgiveness came from God's mercy, and for us it comes through Jesus. In 1 John 1:7, the apostle John writes that the blood of Jesus, God's Son, purifies us from all sin. Being forgiven is not permission to stay the same. It is the grace to turn from the sin, live differently, and make right what we have wronged.
Godseekers, let the Lord uncover your sin so He can cover it with the blood of Jesus. He already sees it. What He asks is that you stop hiding it and name it to Him. Take your hands off the cover. The sin you confess to Him is safe in His mercy.
Prayer
God of mercy, I confess that I have been vague with You about my sin. I have said "forgive me for everything" because naming it felt too hard. Here is my sin, Lord, by name. Forgive me, and give me grace to turn from it and make right what I have wronged. Thank You that Jesus paid for it with His blood. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What sin are you most afraid to name to God, and what do you fear He will do once you say it?
- What would change in the way you pray if you truly believed God covers confessed sin with mercy instead of holding it against you?
Step of Faith
Write down the word you use to make your sin sound smaller. It may be "mistake" or "slip" or "just stress." Cross it out and write the true name of the sin beside it. If it was a lie, write lie. Then say that word to God and ask Him to forgive you.
