He Loved Before You Did Anything

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her"

Ephesians 5:25 (NIV)

Some days you feel like you owe God an apology. You think today went badly, so maybe He pulled back too. Paul says something different, and it changes everything. Christ loved you and gave Himself up before you did anything at all.

This is not a new arrangement made today. Christ gave Himself up for the church long before any of us showed up. That choice was made and it cannot be undone by a bad day. The price was already paid in full at the cross.

Paul names this truth clearly in Romans 5:8. He says God showed His love while we were still sinners. Christ died for us, not after we cleaned ourselves up first. This is the same Bridegroom who already paid the price for His bride.

Every one of us knows the feeling of falling short. We measure how close we feel to God by how well our week went. When the week is hard, we assume His love got smaller too. But Romans 5:8 was written for people exactly like us.

Think about the last time you felt distant from God. Was that feeling based on something He did, or something you did? Look back honestly and you will probably find it was the second one. Let that feeling go, because it was never an accurate reading of His heart.

Godseekers, you are loved right now, not because of today's effort. This love was settled before the foundation of the world was laid. You do not need to perform your way back into His favor. Carry that truth with you as you wait for the Bridegroom who already chose you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You loved Your church before she had done anything to deserve it. You gave Yourself up for us while we were still far from You. You are not waiting for our performance to improve before You draw near. Your love for us was settled at the cross and it has not changed since. We declare that this is true, even on the days we do not feel it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. Where in your life have you been trying to earn something God already gave you for free?
  2. How might our church treat each other differently if we truly believed God's love does not depend on performance?

Step of Faith

Today, name one thing you have been trying to earn from God. Tell Him honestly that you are receiving it instead, as a gift already given.
