"The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!""

1 Corinthians 12:21 (NIV)

"I don't need church, I have my own relationship with God" sounds like deep faith. No middleman, no distractions, no politics, just them and God. It has the ring of maturity. It is actually the exact sentence Paul says the body was never built to say.

That sentence assumes independence is a sign of spiritual strength. The stronger your faith, the argument goes, the less you should need anyone else to carry it with you. Paul pictures this same logic inside the body itself, and he does not let it stand.

"The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I don't need you!'" Neither can the head say it to the feet. Paul names the parts that would feel most justified saying it, the ones that seem most essential, and tells them plainly they do not get to.

No part of the body was ever designed to function alone. Not the eye, not the head, not the parts that seem to matter most. The more essential a part looks, the more it actually depends on parts it cannot see doing work it cannot do.

That includes you, however self-sufficient your faith has started to feel. Needing other believers was never a sign that your faith is weak. It was built into you on purpose, the same way it was built into every other part of the body.

Godseekers, you were never meant to go it alone. Christ holds the body together, and He built you to need the people around you, not despite your faith but because of it. Let someone else carry what you have been carrying by yourself.

Prayer

Abba Father, I have called my independence maturity when it was actually pride. I have told myself I do not need anyone else to carry this faith with me. Forgive me for acting like the parts of the body that thought they could function alone. Thank You for building me to need other believers, not as a flaw but as Your design. Give me the humility to let someone carry what I have been carrying by myself. In Jesus' name, Amen.

1. What are you protecting by calling your isolation spiritual independence, and who has that distance actually cost you?
2. What are you afraid would happen if you actually let another believer see what you are carrying?
