The Uncomfortable Kind of Love

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, Misquoted

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds."

Hebrews 10:24 (NIV)

Someone has sat two seats away from the same person for months without ever really noticing how they are doing. Same row, same smile, same small talk about the weather. Presence became a habit long before it became love. Nobody meant harm by it. It just never turned into anything more than proximity.

That kind of presence quietly gets mistaken for love. Being in the same room, nodding along, showing up week after week, it all feels like enough. Scripture asks for something closer than that.

The writer of Hebrews does not ask believers merely to be near one another. He asks them to consider one another, the kind of attention that actually notices what is going on beneath the surface. Then he asks them to spur each other toward love and good deeds, a word that carries real push behind it, not a passive nod.

Considering someone takes more effort than sitting beside them. It means noticing the tired answer behind "I'm fine." It means asking a second question instead of moving on after the first one. Spurring takes even more, because it means actually saying something once you have noticed.

Sometimes that means a conversation that is not entirely comfortable. Encouragement is not always a compliment. It might be asking a hard question, offering a needed correction, or simply naming what someone has been avoiding saying out loud. Love that costs nothing to give rarely moves anyone forward.

Godseekers, this is the love the gathering was actually built for. Not a room full of people quietly near each other, but people who consider each other closely enough to say the harder, truer thing. Find someone today and pay them the kind of attention that finally moves past the weather.

Prayer

Gracious God, I have mistaken proximity to other believers for real love. I have sat near people for months without ever really considering what they carry. Forgive me for choosing comfort over consideration, and safety over speaking the truer thing. Give me the courage to notice someone closely enough to actually help them. Use me today to spur someone toward You, even if it costs me something to say it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. Who have you been near for a long time without ever really considering what they are carrying?
  2. What is it costing you to avoid saying the harder, truer thing to someone you love?

Step of Faith

Reach out to one specific person today. Name what you have actually noticed about them, and say the encouraging or honest thing you have been holding back.
