"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."
1 John 5:14 (NIV)
"I guess it just wasn't God's will" is one of the easiest sentences to say and one of the hardest to actually explain. It sounds humble. It sounds spiritual. But if you are honest, you often say it because the prayer went unanswered, not because you actually know what God intended. The phrase covers up how little any of us actually know His will in advance.
That uncertainty can quietly shrink your prayers. If confidence in prayer meant guessing God's will correctly, you would have good reason to stop asking for anything specific. You would learn to pray only safe, hedged requests, the kind that cannot really disappoint you. That is not the confidence Scripture actually promises.
1 John 5:14 does not ask you to guess correctly. It says confidence comes from asking "according to his will" and trusting that He hears. That phrase was never meant to make you nervous about praying wrong. It was meant to move your confidence off yourself and onto Him.
You do not need to know God's will in advance to pray with confidence. The same Father who already knows the difference between bread and stone does not need your help sorting this request. His goodness has never depended on comparison to anyone else's. Your job was never to predict His decision correctly. It was only to bring it to Him honestly.
This means you can stop hedging your prayers to protect yourself from disappointment. You do not have to keep every request vague or general just so a "No!" will not feel personal. Ask specifically, but leave the outcome to Him.
Godseekers, bring Him the actual thing you want, not the safest version of it. Your confidence was never supposed to come from guessing correctly, and it was never meant to guarantee the outcome either. It comes from a Father who hears you, decides according to His will, and has already proven He is good. Ask honestly, then trust Him with the results.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess that fear has shaped the way I pray. I have kept my requests vague, afraid that a clear "No." would be harder to bear. Thank You that my confidence rests on Your character, not on my ability to predict Your will. Teach me to bring You my honest heart, and trust You completely with what You decide. In Jesus' name, Amen.
