"But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his road had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus."
Acts 9:27 (NIV)
One word changes everything when everyone else stays silent. The word "but" marks a dramatic shift in this story. While all the disciples maintained their distance from Paul, Barnabas acted differently. He stepped forward when others stepped back. His courage created a bridge where fear had built walls.
Connecting people requires personal risk and sacrificial investment of reputation. Barnabas didn't send a message or arrange a distant meeting. He personally escorted Paul to the apostles himself. This action put his own credibility directly on the line. In 1955, Rosa Parks risked everything by refusing to give up her bus seat. Sometimes connecting justice with action requires personal sacrifice.
True bridge builders use their influence to serve others' advancement. Barnabas had built relationships and trust with the apostles over time. He could have protected this valuable social capital for himself. Instead, he spent it on Paul's behalf without guarantee of return. His reputation became Paul's pathway to acceptance and ministry opportunity.
Courage acts decisively while others debate and delay their responses. The Greek word translated "took" suggests firm, deliberate action. Barnabas didn't hesitate or seek committee approval for his decision. He saw what needed to happen and made it happen immediately. Courage seizes moments that timidity allows to slip away forever.
Physical presence communicates commitment more powerfully than distant words alone. Barnabas brought Paul directly into the apostles' presence. His physical accompaniment sent a clear message about his confidence. He was willing to stand beside Paul during the conversation. This demonstrated commitment that words alone could never communicate effectively.
Godseekers, your relationships exist to serve God's kingdom purposes beyond yourself. Look around for people who need advocates and door openers today. Use whatever influence you have built to create opportunities for others. Take personal risks to connect people who need each other. Choose courage over comfort when bridge building moments appear before you.
Prayer
Dear Lord, You have given us relationships and influence to serve Your kingdom purposes. Give us courage like Barnabas to step forward when others step back. Help us use our reputation and connections to open doors for people who need advocates. Show us when to take personal risks for others' advancement. Make us willing to spend our social capital on someone else's behalf. Give us boldness to act decisively when bridge building opportunities appear. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Personal Reflection
- What relationships or influence has God given you that could be used to open doors for someone who needs an advocate?
- How can you move from offering distant support to taking personal risks that demonstrate real commitment to others' success?
