Too Good to Keep to Yourself

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, Tell

"'Return home and tell how much God has done for you.' So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him."

Luke 8:39 (NIV)

Most of us think telling requires courage we lack. We assume the ready ones felt brave before they ever spoke. We picture a deep breath and a moment of resolve before telling anyone. That is not how this particular story goes at all.

Jesus never told the man to gather his courage first. He gave him one command, return home and tell how much God has done. Nothing about the man's confidence changed before Jesus sent him out. The assumption we carry about bravery simply is not in this text.

What actually carried him was the size of what happened, not nerve. He walked back into a town that had just asked Jesus to leave. He told them anyway, and it was not because he pushed past his fear. The truth was simply too large for him to leave unsaid.

We carry this question more than we like to admit. We wonder if our story is significant enough to interrupt someone's day. Peter and John once said they could not help speaking about what they had seen. What God has done in us is already too large to keep quiet.

You do not need more courage before you speak up. You need to remember how large what God did for you actually is. Stop waiting for a brave feeling that may never arrive. Tell it today, plainly, the way it actually happened to you.

Godseekers, you were never waiting on courage you did not have. The size of what God has done was always the only requirement. Nothing about your confidence needs to change before you tell someone. Go and tell it today, the same way this man did.

Prayer

Risen Lord, You are the one who gave a healed man one sentence and sent him out. You are not waiting for our courage before You use our story. What You did in that man You are fully able to do through us. We are not asking for bravery, we are declaring Your truth is already enough. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What have you been waiting to feel before you tell someone what God has done?
  2. Who in your family, church, or workplace might hear that same truth differently if you told it today?

Step of Faith

Today, commit to telling one specific person your story before the week ends. Choose the moment instead of waiting for the moment to feel right. Tell someone you trust that you are doing this, so it becomes real. Let this be the day courage stops being the excuse you needed.
