What Felt Like Missing Out Was Actually Mercy

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, So You May Know

"They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us."

1 John 2:19 (NIV)

Someone you trusted was teaching a different Jesus. You did not see it coming, because it sounded confident and familiar. Then one day they walked out, and so did the version of Jesus they preached. You have spent nights wondering if you should have gone with them.

John does not call them people with a different opinion. He calls them antichrists, people who denied who Jesus actually is. They did not leave a good church for a better one. They left because the true Jesus was never who they actually believed in.

This verse was never written only to comfort the ones who stayed. It was also written to test whether you are quietly drifting toward the same door. In Hebrews 10, the writer tells a tired church to hold on. What kept you from leaving was never your strength, it was God keeping you.

We rarely think of being spared as a blessing. We assume the more exciting faith belonged to the ones who left. But being kept from a lie is not a smaller grace. What felt like missing out was actually God protecting you.

Some of us are still quietly flattered by confident voices that sound spiritual. Ask yourself honestly if you are drifting toward an easier Jesus. Do not wait until you have already walked out the door to notice. Thank God today for the door He kept closed on your behalf.

Godseekers, being spared was never a smaller story than being rescued. John wrote this so you may know truthfully that staying protected you, not limited you. You did not miss a deeper Jesus, you were kept from a false one. Walk into today grateful, not behind, and still watching your own heart closely.

Prayer

Father of mercies, we did not always see how close we were to being deceived. Some of us never realized how easily we could have followed a lie instead of You. We choose to thank You for keeping us safe when we did not even know we needed it. You closed doors we did not see, and spared us from wreckage we never had to face. We are grateful today simply for being kept. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What is one place in your life where being spared, not chosen or exciting, was actually God's protection?
  2. How can your family or community learn to recognize being kept as a blessing, not a lesser story?

Step of Faith

Today, identify one specific door God closed in your life, even if it hurt at the time. Pray out loud and thank Him specifically for closing it before you understood why. Ask Him to help you trust the doors He is closing right now. Let gratitude replace the disappointment you may still be carrying over what did not open.
