Remember Where He Found You

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, The Posture of Prayer

"The LORD protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me."

Psalm 116:6 (NIV)

The test comes back clear, and the first thing you want to do is forget the waiting room. Or the debt is finally paid. Or the child comes home. The hard season ends, and you close the door on it. You do not want to talk about that time again. You just want your life back.

Refusing to look back can feel like the faithful way past a hard season. There is something right in not wanting to relive pain. Psalm 116 does not ask anyone to stay in that pain forever. But when we shut the door on the hard season, we shut it on the Lord's rescue too. We forget how low we were. And when we forget that, we forget how much God did.

The psalmist goes back and tells the hard part honestly. In verse 3, he says the cords of death wrapped around him. The anguish of the grave came over him. He was overcome by distress and sorrow. He does not tidy the story or skip to the happy ending. If you are still in that place, the psalm does not rush you out of it. But for anyone who has come through, honest remembering is where thanksgiving begins.

When he describes his rescue, the psalmist places himself among the helpless. He says the Lord protects the unwary. These are people who do not see trouble coming and cannot protect themselves. Then he adds that when he was brought low, God saved him. He does not claim he was wise or strong enough to get through. He was low, and God saved him. When we lose sight of that, we start to rewrite the story. Our planning, our grit, and even our strong faith start getting the credit. That is pride, and pride is sin. It takes the glory that belongs to God.

The low place you would rather forget is where the Lord showed you His mercy. It is not a shameful chapter to hide. It is evidence of what God is like. Just before verse 6, the psalmist says the Lord is gracious and righteous, and he calls Him "our God," full of compassion. One man's rescue became something the whole community could sing. Your story can do the same. When you remember where God found you, you remind yourself and others that the Lord saves those who cannot save themselves.

Godseekers, do not close the door on the place where God found you. Remember it honestly, and let the credit go where it belongs. Then tell it. Tell your family at dinner. Tell the friend who prayed with you. The God who saved you when you were brought low is worth remembering out loud.

Prayer

Father, I confess that I have tried to forget the hard places instead of remembering what You did in them. I confess that I have sometimes taken credit that belongs to You. You found me when I was brought low, and You saved me. Thank You for Your mercy in that place. Give me the humility to remember it honestly and the courage to tell it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. What hard season have you closed the door on, and what part of God's help have you lost sight of by refusing to look back?
  2. When you tell the story of how you got through, how much of the credit quietly goes to you, and what would change if you told it with God at the center?

Step of Faith

Before the day ends, tell one person the story of a time God saved you. Start with how low you were. End with what God did.
