He Was Watching Before You Noticed Him

Sermon Series: 2026, Devotionals, Tell

"I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."

John 1:48 (NIV)

Nathanael thought he was alone under that tree. He was not hiding from anyone, just sitting quietly with his own thoughts. No one saw him choose that spot or the reason he needed it. Yet Jesus already knew exactly where he was.

A fig tree was a common place for private prayer. Sitting under one usually meant a person wanted to be unseen for a while. Nathanael likely brought something quiet and personal to God that day. Jesus names the exact tree, the exact moment, before anyone told Him.

Long before that afternoon, God had already known him. Jeremiah describes that same kind of knowing reaching back before birth (Jeremiah 1:5). The fig tree moment was not the beginning of being truly seen. It was simply the day Nathanael found out it was already true.

Every one of us has a fig tree moment we forget. We know the quiet ache of wondering if God notices us when no one else does. Some of us assume we are hidden until proven otherwise. Godseekers has never been hidden from the eyes of God.

Maybe you have wondered if God actually notices the small moments. He was watching you long before you turned toward Him today. Sit for a moment and let that truth settle instead of rushing past it. Ask Him to show you where He has already been present.

Godseekers, you are never as unseen as you feel. God was already present in the quiet place you thought was empty. Carry that awareness with you into every ordinary moment today. You were found long ago, and now you have something worth telling.

Prayer

Living God, You are the One who sees what no one else can see. You knew every one of us before we were ever formed or named. You are fully able to meet us in the quiet places we thought were hidden. We are not asking You to notice us today. We are declaring that You already have. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Reflection

  1. Where have you assumed God was not paying attention to you?
  2. How can our church remind newer members that God already sees and knows them?

Step of Faith

Today, sit in silence for five full minutes with no phone nearby. Do not fill the silence with requests or plans. Simply let yourself be aware that God already sees you. Let that truth settle before you move on with your day.
